The leader of the 2014 student rally, Huang Chi Feng, also appears. He was arrested earlier on the grounds of "not holding the protest" and not in the right place but was released after more than a day.
Many messages and requests were conveyed through slogans and banners during the rally. Hong Kong police estimated that 14,500 people made it into the smallest protest in the district since 2003, according to the South China Morning Post.
Meanwhile, organizers insisted that more than 66,000 people took to the streets to express their support and desire for democracy in Hong Kong. They blamed harsh police security measures after the 2014 student protests and heavy rains that reduced attendance.
A quick survey conducted by the University of Hong Kong estimated that between 27,000 and 35,000 people participated in the July 1 protests.
Hong Kong is experiencing tense and emotional days commemorating the 20th anniversary of this special zone given to China by the United Kingdom. Demonstrations, controversies or confrontations between the two factions supporting the central government of Beijing and demanding independent Hong Kong are no longer rare in this special region, especially on special occasions this year.
