The fire originated from the National Park Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee 28-11 Monday (local time) and quickly spread to the surrounding areas, forcing more than 14,000 people to evacuate the city just in Gatlinburg.
Many city residents nearby Pigeon Forge and elsewhere in Sevier County were also evacuated.
Linda Monholland - a mass evacuation, the Washington Post said the fire situation then "like hell". "I do not want to see something like that again in my life forever," Monholland said.
Gatlinburg officials hope will allow people to return to their homes on days 2-12, but now mandatory evacuation order is still in effect.
Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are popular tourist destinations. According to the BBC, Gatlinburg Mayor Mike Werner, travelers urged support for the region by visiting the sights here, including the National Park Great Smoky range - attracting more than 11 million people to visits per year.
"We're fine - that's our message," Mr. Werner said. "If you really want to do something for Gatlinburg ... Please come back and visit us".
