Flooding attacks throughout South America, 160,000 evacuees

More than 160,000 people living in the border area of Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina had to abandon their homes evacuated due to heavy rains caused serious flooding in two days 26 and 27-12.

According to AFP, only the city Asuncion, the Paraguayan capital, there were 90,000 residents evacuated from yesterday afternoon. In the city of Alberdi 120km from Asuncion, authorities request additional 7,000 families living along the river Paraguay went avoid flooding.

Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes declared a state of emergency in Asuncion and nearby areas to open the funds to support flood victims. There have been many cases killed, but authorities have not announced specific casualty figures.

In Argentina, Telam news agency reported that more than 20,000 people in northeastern countries also evacuated. The central government has shifted aid to the flood-stricken areas most severely devastated. Mauricio Macri's new President pledged to flood control infrastructure investment.

In Uruguay, more than 9,000 people living near the rivers burst their banks have been forced to flee their homes. The state government of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil has required at least 7,000 residents to evacuate. Floodwaters attacked 38 towns in the state, destroying nearly 2,000 homes.

Heavy rain began to pour down many areas in South America since last week, caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon. World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said El Nino this year by the most in 15 years.
