8 first works of old Saigon


Continental Hotel, City Theater, Cho Quan Hospital, Central Post Office ... are the first works built in the land of Saigon Gia Dinh with a history of more than 300 years.

Theatre

Started in 1898 and completed in 1900, the Opera House has Western European architecture. The inside reliefs were painted by French artists like those of late 19th century French theaters.

The theater is the venue for the French opera. In 1956, it was used as the headquarters of the Government of the Republic of Vietnam. In May 1975, it became the city's theater.

Hotel

Continental is the oldest and most famous hotel in the city. Situated on Dong Khoi Street - extending from Saigon river bank to Notre Dame Cathedral. This was the busiest route of the time, with a large French population.

The hotel was built by Pierre Cazeau, a manufacturer of construction materials and household goods, which began construction in 1878 and completed two years later. Architecture, interior as well as layout are standard of a luxury hotel in Paris. This is the stopping place for high ranking French officers and officers to work and gather together visitors of the cross.

After April 30, 1975, this place was renamed Hai Au. In 1989, the building was remodeled and renamed the old Continental, 3,400 m2 wider, 3 storeys high. The hotel has hosted many famous presidents, governors, writers and models.

Currently, Continental is one of the international standard hotel, contributing to the development of HCMC tourism.

Hospital

In 1862, Cho Quan Hospital was donated by some donors to build and manage. Situated on an area of nearly 5 hectares in Cho Quan village between Saigon - Cho Lon, in front of the hospital is the Ben Nghe (now called Tau Hu Canal) flows through. In 1864, the work was handed over to the then-governed administration.

From 1954 to 1957, two thirds of the hospital facilities were used as TB treatment facilities for soldiers and renamed the Ngo Quyen Labor Institute. At the end of 1957, the hospital was returned to the people, taking its name back to Cho Quan Hospital.

In March 1974, the hospital was renamed Han-Viet Medical Center. After April 30, 1975 it was called by its former name. On September 5, 1989, Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee changed to Tropical Disease Hospital, under the Department of Health to date.

Immediately after the capture of Saigon, France established a communications system. In 1860, the "Steel Department" of Saigon (known as Sai Gon Post Office) was established.

On January 13, 1863, the Sai Gon Steel Department officially inaugurated and issued the first "stork" (calling the indigenous stamp). A year later, the Saigon people began sending letters through the "steel wire" (the postal system).

In 1886-1891, the Saigon Post Office was rebuilt to replace modern buildings and residences in accordance with the project of French architect Villedieu with assistant Foulhoux. From July 1, 1894, Saigon started using the telephone system.

Church

Cho Quan Church (20 Tran Binh Trong, District 5) first built in 1700 - is considered the church has the oldest history in Saigon.

According to the scholar Truong Vinh Ky (1837-1898), Dao Cho Quan was associated with the process of expanding the territory to the south of the country. Of the immigrants to the South there are Catholic followers. They gathered, organized the chapel and later the Cho Quan church.

Cho Quan church was originally a simple church. After many construction and then devastated by the time (1720, 1727, 1733, 1775, 1789,1793).

It was not until 1882 (8th), the successor of Nicolas Hamm, laid the groundwork for the new church.

The cathedral, inaugurated in 1896, is located in the center of the city. It has a Western architecture and red roof tiles, which can hold about 1,000 people.

Nail

Built around 1679, Tay Tay Hoi is considered the oldest communal house of ancient Gia Dinh and the South. Currently, it is quite intact in terms of scale and architecture, texture with typical South Vietnam carvings.

The communal house was originally from Hanh Thong village - the starter village of Go Vap - later changed to Tay Tay Hoi (due to the merger of Hanh Thong Tay village (Moi village) and An Hoi village). Dinh Thong Tay Hoi is located in Ward 11, Go Vap District.

Dinh Thong Tay Hoi has a very unique prince. The two gods worshiped at the communal house were the princes of King Ly Thai To, crowned with prince Vu Duc, were exiled to the southernmost country and became "reclaimed land" in Vietnamese history. ; The two gods are: King Ching Hai and Divine King.

Temple

Hu Nghiem is located in Dang Van Bi street (Thu Duc district), considered the oldest pagoda in HCM City.

Today, the temple is often called Hue Nghiem 1 to distinguish it from Hue Nghiem 2 temple in District 2.

The temple was founded by Zen master Thuy Tuong (1681-1757) in the 18th century. Many of the founding year records are 1721.

At first, the pagoda was built in lowland, about 100 m away from the existing pagoda. Then, Nguyen Thi Hien (1763-1821) legal name Lieu Dao, self Thanh Tam, donated land to rebuild.

The temple was restored many times, the largest is in the late nineteenth century by the master of Dat Ly - Hue Luu organization.

Its architecture was changed at the renovations in 1960, 1969, 1990 and 2003 with matched tile roofs, curved heads. Roof roof decorated with stylized lotus flowers. Temple campus is quite wide, with many ancient towers. The three-storied pagoda and Guan Yin station in the front yard of the pagoda were built in 1990.


Bridge

It is one of the oldest surviving bridges in Saigon, the bridge over the Han River - Ben Nghe, connecting District 1 and District 4 (former Khanh Hoi).

The bridge was bold in the West, invested by French shipping company Messageries Maritimes and Levallois Perret (former Eiffel) in 1893-1894.
