North Korea is thought to have launched medium-range ballistic missiles into the sea of Japan.

The South Korean general staff said the missile was launched May 21 afternoon at a site near Pukchang, 60 kilometers northeast of Pyongyang, according to Reuters. The rocket is believed to fly 500 km to the Sea of Japan, reaching an altitude of about 560 km.

According to Japanese Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, the missile is likely to fall outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone, causing no damage to ships and planes in the area.

The White House says the system "has a shorter range than the missiles that North Korea launched in the last three tests." A White House official told CNN it was a medium-range ballistic missile.

Japan strongly opposes the North's rocket launch, calling it repeated repetition and violating United Nations Security Council resolutions. The South Korean Foreign Ministry condemned the test as reckless and irresponsible.

Last week, North Korea successfully launched a new Hwasong-12 medium-range ballistic missile near Kusong, North Pyongan province. Pyongyang says the missile has a range of US capabilities and is capable of carrying "heavy warheads."
