The US Navy says the USS Oscar Austin (DDG-79) May 5 crosses the Bosphorus and enters the Black Sea. The task of USS Oscar Austin is to increase cooperation with allies in the region, Sputnik led the US Navy statement said.
During the Black Sea, USS Oscar Austin will join the maritime campaign to assist Eastern European countries in the NATO (NATO) Treaty Organization. This is part of the Atlantic Resolve campaign. The US Navy declares that this operation is in accordance with the Montreux Convention and international law.
The Montreux Convention states that countries not contiguous to the Black Sea will only be permitted to carry warships under 15,000 DWT across the Bosphorus. They can only deploy up to 9 warships with a total underwater drainage of less than 30,000 tons at a time in this area and must not exceed 21 days in the Black Sea.
